ABSTRACT

Background: Lichen planus (LP) is an inflammatory disorder believed to result from CD8+ cytotoxic T-cell (CTL) mediated autoimmune reactions against basal keratinocytes. We present a review of LP following COVID-19 infection and vaccination. Method(s): Literature searches were conducted on PubMed and Google Scholar from 2019 to 7/2022. 35 articles were selected based on subject relevance, and references within articles were also screened. Result(s): 39 cases of post-vaccination LP and 6 cases of post-infection LP were found among case reports and case series. 150 cases of postvaccination LP and 12 cases of post-infection LP were found in retrospective and prospective studies. Conclusion(s): LP is a rare complication of COVID-19 infection and vaccination that may be mediated by overstimulation of T-cell responses and proinflammatory cytokine production. However, it does not represent a limitation against COVID-19 vaccination, and the benefits of vaccination considerably outweigh the risks.

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 has infected more than 600 million people worldwide over the last 2.5 years. So far, there efficacy of many antiviral drugs against COVID-19 has been evaluated only in small studies conducted in different countries. Objective. To assess the efficacy of umifenovir in patients with COVID-19. Materials and methods. We performed systematic search of publications in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Sixteen studies with a total of 1,843 patients were included in the analysis. The following endpoints were evaluated: frequencies of negative PCR test on days 7 and 14;mortality in patients with mild, moderate, and severe disease;and frequency of fever resolution on day 7. Results. We found that patients receiving umifenovir demonstrated a significantly higher frequency of negative PCR test on day 7 than patients who received no causal therapy or other antiviral drugs (odds ratio (OR) 1.69, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.09-2.62, p = 0.02, I2 = 13%). This difference was even more significant among patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 (OR: 2.03, 95% CI: 1.24-3.32, p = 0.005, I2 = 0%), as well as on day 14 (OR: 2.02, 95% CI: 1.35-3.94, p = 0.0007, I2 = 50%). We also observed a reduced risk of death in the studies that included only patients with mild and moderate disease (JR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.33-0.83, p = 0.006, I2 = 0). Umifenovir therapy did not affect the frequency of fever resolution by day 7 (OR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.49-1.56, p = 0.64, I2 = 0%). Conclusion. Umifenovir significantly accelerated virus elimination by days 7 and 14 among patients with mild to moderate COVID-19. ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of attitudes toward life, recreational sports values, and workplace risk perceptions on urban development and public well-being under the risk of the COVID-19 epidemic in China. A mixed-method research study was conducted, and 2400 valid questionnaires were collected via purposeful sampling. The questionnaires were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 statistical software and validated with basic statistical methods and Pearson's correlation analysis. Semi-structured interviews were then conducted to collect the opinions of 12 respondents on the questionnaire results, including academics, foreign entrepreneurs and employees, local entrepreneurs and employees, and official institutions. Finally, all the data collected were discussed via triangulation analysis. The survey found that different cities' social and industrial development and job market needs lead to different attitudes toward life, leisure values, and perceptions of job-seeking and employment risks. The smoother a person's growing-up background, the better their learning history, the better their learning and working experience, and the richer their life experience;consequently, positive attitudes toward life, correct leisure values, and positive attitudes toward job hunting and employment can be cultivated. In addition, people with positive attitudes toward life, leisure values, and job hunting and employment can improve their city's economy and environment for sustainable development, thereby improving their quality of life and increasing their well-being.

ABSTRACT

Due to the inappropriate or untimely distribution of post-disaster goods, many regions did not receive timely and efficient relief for infected people in the coronavirus disease outbreak that began in 2019. This study develops a model for the emergency relief routing problem (ERRP) to distribute post-disaster relief more reasonably. Unlike general route optimizations, patients' suffering is taken into account in the model, allowing patients in more urgent situations to receive relief operations first. A new metaheuristic algorithm, the hybrid brain storm optimization (HBSO) algorithm, is proposed to deal with the model. The hybrid algorithm adds the ideas of the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm and large neighborhood search (LNS) algorithm into the BSO algorithm, improving its ability to escape from the local optimum trap and speeding up the convergence. In simulation experiments, the BSO algorithm, BSO+LNS algorithm (combining the BSO with the LNS), and HBSO algorithm (combining the BSO with the LNS and SA) are compared. The results of simulation experiments show the following: (1) The HBSO algorithm outperforms its rivals, obtaining a smaller total cost and providing a more stable ability to discover the best solution for the ERRP;(2) the ERRP model can greatly reduce the level of patient suffering and can prioritize patients in more urgent situations.

ABSTRACT

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 saw a growing interest in starting own business: as per the Census Bureau's Business Formation Statistics, the number of applications to form new businesses filed in the U.S. was the highest compared to any other year on record, reaching the total of 5.4 million (Economic Innovation Group, 2022), while in the EU, after an initial downward trend recorded in the first and second quarters of 2020, the number of new business registrations grew again in the third quarter of that year, and this upward trend continued throughout 2021 (Eurostat, 2022). Of course, as a result of Russia's invasion on Ukraine and related economic crisis, a downward tendency could be observed, but business registration levels in the EU in the first quarter of 2022 were still higher than during the pre-COVID 19 pandemic period (2015-2019) (Eurostat, 2022) and online searches indicating and intent to open a business spiked by 76% from 2018 to 2022 (Search Engine Journal, 2022). This shows that despite many external impediments, people are still tempted to start their own business, and many influencers, motivational speakers and coaches, as well as various popular TV shows broadcast worldwide (like the Apprentice, Dragons' Den, Shark Tank or Planet of the Apps) encourage them to do so. Becoming an entrepreneur has become a goal many people, especially 20-, 30- and 40-year-olds, strive to achieve. However, many of those people fail to realise that the very entry in the business register does not automatically make them entrepreneurs or their business successful. Neither does a good (or even excellent and innovative) business idea that attracts customers, as it was in Kodak's, Blockbuster's, or Ask Jeeves' case. What is required, is the ability to stay attractive to existing and prospective customers, i.e., the ability to win and retain customers, and to adapt to the changing demands, trends and economic conditions. All this can be achieved thanks to a meticulously designed and regularly reviewed and updated business model. The aim of this paper is to present and analyse the learning process of acquiring and building competences in the area of business models with the use of different innovative tools. The results presented and discussed in this article come from surveys as well as face-to-face and on-line meetings conducted in the ProBM 2 ERASMUS+ project (Understanding and Developing Business Models in the Era of Globalisation), in which the total of 261 respondents from seven (7) European countries, i.e. Poland, Italy, Greece, Romania, Portugal, Malta, and Switzerland, took part between 2019 and 2022. From the meetings and surveys it follows that much more awareness of business models needs to be encouraged and developed, particularly as regards improving competences helping future business owners and their employees assess profitability and efficiency of their operations and ensure that the business will be a going concern. © 2022 Authors. ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: The decline in GDP caused by the global economic recession of 2008 and that caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the poor economy of countries around the globe with increased rates of unemployment and adverse job conditions. This systematic review aims to identify the impact of a Financial crisis on Psychological well-being, Life satisfaction, Health Satisfaction, and Financial Incapability. Methodology: The literature included in the review was searched from Feb 1, 2023, to March 26, 2023, by using the PUBMED database as the search engine. Studies discussing the impact of the financial or economic crisis on psychological well-being, Health, Life satisfaction, and Financial Incapabilities published in the English Language were included in this review whereas systematic reviews and metanalysis, case reports, articles published in languages other than English and articles with limited access were excluded. Result(s): Of the 26 articles found eligible for the study, there were 22 Quantitative studies, 2 qualitative studies, and 2 Mixed Method Studies. Most of the articles included in this study discussed the Global Economic crisis caused by COVID-19 and the Global Financial Crisis of 2008. Almost 80% of the studies included in this review discussed psychological well-being and the prevalence of psychological disorders including Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Fear, Loneliness, Burnout, and Suicide whereas the rest of the articles discussed mortality regarding mental disorders. Conclusion(s): Financial crisis or economic recession results in an increased prevalence of common mental disorders affecting psychological well-being by increasing rates of unemployment and adverse job conditions. ABSTRACT

The problem of introducing online learning is becoming more and more popular in our society. Due to COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, there is an urgent need for the transition of educational institutions to online learning, so this paper will help people not make mistakes in the process and afterward. The paper's primary purpose is to investigate the effectiveness of machine learning tools that can solve the problem of assessing student adaptation to online learning. These tools include intelligent methods and models, such as classification techniques and neural networks. This work uses data from an online survey of students at different levels: school, college, and university. The survey consists of questions such as gender, age, level of education, whether the student is in the city, class duration, quality of Internet connection, government/non-government educational institution, availability of virtual learning environment, whether the student is familiar with IT, financial conditions, type of Internet connection, a device used for studying, etc. To obtain the results on the effectiveness of online education were used the following machine learning algorithms and models: Random Forest (RF), Extra Trees (ET), Extreme, Light, and Simple Gradient Boosting (GB), Decision Trees (DT), K-neighbors (K-mean), Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naїve Bayes (NB) classifier and others. ABSTRACT

Basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) is one of the popular sequence similarity analysis tools. However, some students and researchers just blindly use the default parameters. Moreover, some students are confused about how to choose the right program. In a word, it is prone to be misused and researchers often draw conclusions incorrectly. In view of this, we traced back the internet hot topic in early 2020 - "MORDERATELY STRONG CONFIRMATION OF A LABORATORY ORIGIN OF COVID-19", and took it as teaching materials to guide the student to use BLAST currently through reanalyzing and reproducing the source of errors. Then we arranged an interesting experiment about fabricating dinosaur genes through modifying a chicken gene. In the experimental design to make the students grasp the BLAST tools better, one group fabricated the dinosaur gene and the other group decrypted the added bases. This instructional design could be conducive to cultivate students ' ability about distinguishing different viewpoints correctly, and we hope it can be enlightening and helpful to the teaching of BLAST tools.Copyright © 2022 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

Partisanship, polarization, and platforms are foundational to how people perceive contentious issues. Using a probability sample (n = 825), we examine these factors in tandem across four political claims concerning US presidential elections and the COVID-19 pandemic. We find Democrats and Republicans differ in their belief in true and false claims, with each party believing more in pro-attitudinal claims than in counter-attitudinal claims. These results are especially pronounced for affectively polarized partisans. We also find interactions between partisanship and platform use where Republicans who use Google or Twitter are more likely to believe in false claims about COVID-19 than Republicans who do not use these platforms. Our findings highlight that Americans' beliefs in political claims are associated with their political identity through both partisanship and polarization, and the use of search and social platforms appears critical to these relationships. These findings have implications for understanding why realities are malleable to voter preferences in liberal democracies. ABSTRACT

Companies continuously produce several documents containing valuable information for users. However, querying these documents is challenging, mainly because of the heterogeneity and volume of documents available. In this work, we investigate the challenge of developing a Big Data Question Answering system, i.e., a system that provides a unified, reliable, and accurate way to query documents through naturally asked questions. We define a set of design principles and introduce BigQA, the first software reference architecture to meet these design principles. The architecture consists of high-level layers and is independent of programming language, technology, querying and answering algorithms. BigQA was validated through a pharmaceutical case study managing over 18k documents from Wikipedia articles and FAQ about Coronavirus. The results demonstrated the applicability of BigQA to real-world applications. In addition, we conducted 27 experiments on three open-domain datasets and compared the recall results of the well-established BM25, TF-IDF, and Dense Passage Retriever algorithms to find the most appropriate generic querying algorithm. ABSTRACT

Pandemics often cause dramatic losses of human lives and impact our societies in many aspects such as public health, tourism, and economy. To contain the spread of an epidemic like COVID-19, efficient and effective contact tracing is important, especially in indoor venues where the risk of infection is higher. In this work, we formulate and study a novel query called Indoor Contact Query (<sc>ICQ</sc>) over raw, uncertain indoor positioning data that digitalizes people's movements indoors. Given a query object <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$o$</tex-math></inline-formula>, e.g., a person confirmed to be a virus carrier, an <sc>ICQ</sc> analyzes uncertain indoor positioning data to find objects that most likely had close contact with <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$o$</tex-math></inline-formula> for a long period of time. To process <sc>ICQ</sc>, we propose a set of techniques. First, we design an enhanced indoor graph model to organize different types of data necessary for <sc>ICQ</sc>. Second, for indoor moving objects, we devise methods to determine uncertain regions and to derive positioning samples missing in the raw data. Third, we propose a query processing framework with a close contact determination method, a search algorithm, and the acceleration strategies. We conduct extensive experiments on synthetic and real datasets to evaluate our proposals. The results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposals. IEEE

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on human behaviors and how it influenced peoples' interests in cultural products is an unsolved problem. While prior studies mostly adopt subjective surveys to find an answer, these methods are always suffering from high cost, limited size, and subjective bias. Inspired by the rich user-oriented data over the Internet, this work explores the possibility to leverage users' search logs to reflect humans' underlying cultural product interests. To further examine how the COVID-19 mobility policy might influence cultural interest changes, we propose a new regression discontinuity design that has the additional potential to predict the recovery phase of peoples' cultural product interests. By analyzing the 1592 search interest time series in 6 countries, we found different patterns of change in interest in movies, music, and art during the COVID-19 pandemic, but a clear overall incremental increase. Across the six countries we studied, we found that changes in interest in cultural products were found to be strongly correlated with mobility and that as mobility declined, interest in movies, music, and art increased by an average of 35, 27 and 20, respectively, with these changes lasting at least eight weeks. © 2023 ACM.

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the relevance of the use of a single irradiation of lungs in treatment of pneumonia caused by a new coronavirus infection. Clinical observations are presented that demonstrate perspectives in the treatment of this disease. Patients with severe pneumonia who were prescribed LD-RT (low-dose radiation therapy) at a dose of 0.5-1.5 Gy showed shorter recovery times and no complications. This method of treatment has shown its effectiveness in a number of studies from different countries, predicting success and economic benefits in its further use and study. A literature search containing information on relevant studies was carried out in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Google Scholar systems. In this commentary, we report on lessons learned over 2 years (2020-2022) from conducting primary care research through a novel alliance of an ACO consisting of independent practices, a health plan, and several academic researchers, with the support of a private foundation. Am J Manag Care. 2023;29(6):In Press _____ Takeaway Points The process of collaborating on research was mutually beneficial for a network of independent practices and a group of academic researchers. * The process benefited the practices by facilitating more precise thinking about quality improvement, motivating the staff, and enabling readiness for health system change. * The process benefited the researchers by illuminating nuances of clinical and organizational workflow and revealing the practices' in-depth understanding of the communities they serve. * If practices have more federally funded opportunities to consistently participate in research, it could help speed greater adoption of payment reform models to promote health equity at the state and national levels. _____ A 2021 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, Implementing High-Quality Primary Care, has called out the persistent "neglect of basic primary care research" in the United States.1 A 2020 study by the RAND Corporation found that primary care research represents only 1% of all federally funded projects (including projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [AHRQ], and the Veterans Health Administration).2 However, innovation in primary care is central to advancing health care delivery. Leaders in health care innovation recently called for CMS to test a proposal for primary care payment reform in accountable care organizations (ACOs) composed of independent practices (ie, practices not owned by hospitals).3 By innovating in independent practices, these leaders argued that CMS would provide incentives for those practices to stay independent, thereby potentially decreasing the vertical market consolidation that contributes to rising health care costs.3 Yet these same practices may have less experience with the kind of systematic innovation that leads to generalizable insights, because what little funding is available for primary care research is mostly awarded to large academic medical centers.1 AHRQ's practice-based research networks have not fully addressed this gap, as they have struggled to find infrastructure and maintain funding.1 In this commentary, we report on the lessons we learned over 2 years (2020-2022) from conducting primary care research through a novel alliance of an ACO consisting of independent practices, a health plan, and several academic researchers, with the support of a private foundation. Due to the massive volume of publications, some retrieval systems have been developed to provide researchers with useful information. In these systems, lexical searching methods are widely used, which raises many issues related to acronyms, synonyms, and rare keywrds. In this paper, we present a hybrid relation retrieval system, CovRelex-SE, based on embeddings to provide high-quality search results. ABSTRACT

Background: COVID-19 pandemic times forced health education to go online, and, due to this necessity, long-term difficulties in education such as bibliographic search in databases like PubMed might have worsened even when platforms such as PubMed provide helping mechanisms to the user. These difficulties or even complete lack of knowledge are, unfortunately, not well documented in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to describe doubts, lack of knowledge and questions of researchers regarding bibliographic research in PubMed as well as to solve all of those doubts by developing a didactic e-book in relation to bibliographic research in PubMed. Methods: This cross-sectional and populational-based study was conducted between January and April 2021. In northern Brazil, a total of 105 dentistry undergraduate students (DUS) received an anonymous digital form (Google® Forms Platform) using a non-probabilistic "snowball” sampling technique. The digital form was composed of four blocks of dichotomous and multiple-choice questions. After signing the informed consent term, the DUS were divided into three groups according to their period/semester in the dentistry program during the study time (G1: 1st period/semester;G2: 5th period/semester and G3: 10th period/semester). A total of 25 questions referring to demographic, educational and knowledge data about how to do scientific research and how to use bibliographic search in PubMed were asked, and all data were presented as descriptive percentages and then analyzed using the Chi square and G tests. Results: From 105 (100%), G1 had 29/105 (27.6%);G2 had 37/105 (35.2%);G3 had 39/105 (37.2%), the average age was 22.34 years and most participants were female 85/105 (81%). Among our sample, 56/105 (53.4%) had not used any type of search strategy, and 96/105 (91.4%) used database research methods. The main database for literature search used was Scielo 92/105 (87.6%), and 63/105 (60%) had general questions or doubts about bibliographic research. All these data had statistical significance p < 0.0001. Conclusions: The results demonstrate a lack of knowledge and doubts in DUS from three different periods/semesters, and this collected information can help in the formation of didactic material to solve such doubts. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

This review was carried out with the objective to study patterns of neurological, psychological and other physical consequences of COVID-19 in the long term. The guidelines of PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Metaanalyses) had been followed;22 articles, published during January 2020 to September 2021, were selected. Original research, review articles, editorial and viewpoints were included. Google Scholar, Medline, and PubMed were searched through 2020 till 2021.Data collection in selected studies was performed mainly through the online survey, telephone survey, use of medical records, and patient interviews. This systematic review contains the studies conducted in the American, Asian and European countries. The major outcomes identified were the neurological, psychological, and other long-term chronic manifestations of COVID- 19. This review demonstrates that long-COVID has started to bring a huge wave of patients, the count of them being millions now, who can enter a phase of disability due to neurological damages if not treated during the early course of illness. Though more disabling than lethal, long-COVID patients with a neurological deficit is expected to overburden the healthcare system globally which is already been struggling to handle acute COVID-19 patients in this once-in-a-lifetime pandemic.Copyright © 2023 Lahore Medical And Dental College. ABSTRACT

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has been applied to provide health care facilities for elders and parents. Remote health care is essential for providing scarce resources and facilities to coronavirus patients. Ongoing IoMT communication is susceptible to potential security attacks. In this research, an artificial intelligence-driven security model of the IoMT is also proposed to simulate and analyses the results. Under the proposed plan, only authorized users will be able to access private and sensitive patient information, and unauthorized users will be unable to access a secure healthcare network. The various phases for implementing artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in the IoMT system have been discussed. AI-driven IoMT is implemented using decision trees, logistic regression, support vector machines (SVM), and k-nearest neighbours (KNN) techniques. ABSTRACT

PurposeUndoubtedly, coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has released unprecedented disruptions and health crisis on people and activities everywhere. The impacts extend to public–private partnership (PPP) arrangements in the construction industry. Concomitantly, PPP pacts are contributing to combat the pandemic. However, literature on the PPP concept in the COVID-19 era remain under-researched. This study aims to review the current literature on PPPs in the COVID-19 pandemic and present the key themes, research gaps and future research directions.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, 29 highly relevant literature were sourced from Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed search engines within the systematic literature review (SLR) methodology. With the aid of qualitative content analysis, the 29 articles were critically analysed leading to the extraction of hot research themes on PPPs in the coronavirus pandemic.FindingsThe results of the SLR produced eight themes such as major changes in PPP contracts, development of the COVID-19 vaccines, economic recession, facemasks and testing kits, governance and sustainability of PPPs. In addition, the study reveals seven research gaps that need further investigations among the scientific research community on mental health and post-pandemic recovery plans.Research limitations/implicationsThe articles selected for this review were limited to only peer-reviewed journal papers written in English excluding conference papers. This restriction may have taken out some relevant literature but they had insignificant impact on the overall outcome of this research.Practical implicationsTo improve the understanding of practitioners in the construction industry on key issues on PPPs in the COVID-19 pandemic, the study provides them a checklist of relevant themes.Originality/valueAs a novel literature review relating PPPs to the coronavirus, it sets the foundation for further research and contributes to practical measures to control the virus.
